A cult figure as the host of one of Australia’s most popular podcasts, Dylan Buckley’s transition from AFL player to the media world has been seamless.
The son of Carlton legend Jimmy, Dylan was drafted to the Blues under the Father-Son rule and spent six years with the Bluebaggers and a further two with the GWS Giants.
While at Carlton, Buckley dabbled in the media department, hosting a quirky short-form interview series and helping to create original off-the-wall material at a time when AFL clubs were just starting to open their minds to the possibilities around social-specific content.
These early experiments at Carlton gathered steam when Buckley moved to the Giants in 2018 and entered the new world of podcasting, creating a new interview series called ‘Dyl and Friends.’
Buckley’s warm, laid-back, humorous and sometimes self-deprecating style was a hit with listeners and his infectious personality meant he had no trouble finding people to appear on the show. His guest list quickly expanded beyond his teammates, speaking to sporting and entertainment identities from across the spectrum as the series developed a cult following.
The Dyl and Friends podcast has ticked over 50 episodes and more than a million listens. Buckley has now established a dedicated studio space where he will be able to film his interviews and offer visual content to compliment his audio offering.
Having relocated home to Melbourne, Buckley works as a producer with 3AW and hosts the weekly ‘Teams on Ten’ segment during the AFL season for Network Ten.
While he continues to talk to some of the biggest and most interesting names in the AFL world, Buckley is passionate about sharing a range of voices on his show, whether it be experts in resilience and mental health, or someone you might walk past on the street.
Buckley’s ability to converse with anyone he comes across is a genuine asset as he continues to create engaging, intelligent, and entertaining content that appeals to a broad range of listeners.
When not at work, Buckley enjoys Melbourne living with his partner Justine and his French Bulldog Frankie.
