Cam Mooney’s 15 year playing career was filled with premierships and personal accolades, and in the decade since his retirement he has remained a widely recognised member of the AFL community.

Bio

Hailing from Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, Mooney was drafted to North Melbourne in 1996. He didn’t make his debut until Round 7 of 1999 but once in, remained in the side for the rest of the year and became a premiership player just shy of his 20th birthday.

As a player, Mooney was known as a passionate opponent, a powerful forward who would give defenders headaches. He played in three premierships across the two clubs he played for, North Melbourne and Geelong. Mooney joined Geelong Football Club ahead of the 2000 season and became a significant contributor to the Cats upcoming era of success. While he consistently hit the scoreboard, Mooney’s best season came in 2007 when he was named All-Australian and kicked 67 goals, including 5 in the Cats Grand Final win over Port Adelaide. Another Grand Final appearance beckoned in 2008, ending in a heartbreaking loss, however in 2009 Mooney claimed his third and final premiership medal.

In 2011 Mooney retired with 221 games, 297 goals and three premierships to his name. Since retiring, Mooney has maintained an involvement in AFL starting with two years coaching with the Western Bulldogs, but it is in the media where he has flourished. A member of the Fox Footy family, featuring on shows such as AFL 360, The Bounce and Game Day coverage, Mooney also regularly appears on Geelong’s local radio station K-Rock and writes for the Geelong Advertiser Newspaper.

Mooney currently lives in Geelong with his wife Seona and four children.
