From Colac in country Victoria, Aaron has risen through the ranks of Australian cricket to successfully captain his country in ODIs and T20 Internationals.
Finch’s cricketing journey began at the Colac West Cricket Club in western Victoria. One of four siblings, he was also a very keen footballer but it was his undeniable cricketing talent that ultimately shone through.
An explosive opening batsman, he first caught the eye of the cricketing world as a member of Australia’s 2006 Under 19 World Cup team, finishing the tournament with 155 runs at an average of 38.75.
The following summer, Finch was awarded his first Victorian contract, which led to his List A debut in October 2007, then his first-class debut in December 2007.
An original foundation member of the Melbourne Renegades, he is a four-time Renegades MVP and captained their inaugural premiership team in BBL|08.
Finch made his T20 International debut in January 2011 against England in Adelaide, then his ODI debut in January 2013 against Sri Lanka at his beloved MCG.
In August that year, he smashed the world record for the highest score in Men’s T20 International cricket with an incredible 156 off 63 balls against England at Southampton. He subsequently raised the T20I bar again with a stunning 172 off 76 balls against Zimbabwe at Harare in July 2018, when he also became the first player to break the 900 ICC T20I Rating Points barrier.
Finch’s natural leadership skills and high cricket IQ have seen him captain Australia in both T2oI and ODI cricket and he continues to serve as his country’s leader in both white-ball formats.
After being a pivotal member of Australia’s 2015 ICC World Cup winning team, he was given the honour of leading his country in the 2019 tournament.
Finch also possesses one of the most precious items in Australian sport – the famous baggy green cap – after making his test debut against Pakistan in October 2018.
It’s been an incredible journey from junior cricket in country Victoria to one of the game’s most damaging opening batsmen and highly-regarded leaders.
Off the field, Aaron is a devoted family man and cherishes time with his wife Amy and their 2 rescue dogs Frankie and Evie.
On a beautiful day, you’re likely to find him out on the golf course. If the weather isn’t so kind, he’ll be inside playing golf on his Playstation!
Don’t be afraid to fail, it’s not weakness. Real strength is getting up and having a crack when your back is against the wall.
